Millennials will wait until they find a move-in ready house that’s right for them. They generally want a home with an open floor concept. Some motivated sellers seeking to appeal to this newer generation of homebuyers are considering knocking down non-structural walls to create a cooking/living/dining area that is more suited for what millennials want. This floor plan is better suited for social media photos and socializing in general.
They will need wi-fi access. If your home is wi-fi ready, we need to put that in the marketing information. Millennials will skip over homes they don’t think are wi-fi ready. They will also check their signals on their smartphones, so if your home gets a bad signal, invest in a booster to improve the wi-fi coverage so that you can prove to the potential homebuyers that solid coverage is within their reach.
Millennials are an ecologically responsible generation. If the home you’re selling isn’t green lifestyle ready, it could be a deal breaker. Before replacing something for aesthetic purposes, investing in energy-efficient heating and cooling such as a ductless mini-split combined with proper insulation might set your home apart. If you’re replacing flooring or cabinets, consider bamboo flooring, because it’s a sustainable option.
Be upfront with this generation. They will call you out on anything you aren’t upfront with. With almost a third of this generation holding a bachelor’s degree, millennials are incredibly well educated. And they will stop and check any data point that doesn’t make sense to them. Save your energy bills, your tax bills, and your internet provider bill, so that they can see the full cost of the house.
