Marco Island residents invested $250 million dollars into its Septic Tank Replacement Program (STRP). The Septic Tank Replacement Program helps stop the flow of possible waste into canals. The program stopped residents from utilizing septic tanks to handle their waste discharges. There was an update of the Marco Island waste treatment facilities. Plus, we saw a comprehensive rework of the collector system. As it turns out, this was an impressive proactive step to protect the environment in and around the island.
Current Water Quality Efforts On Marco Island
Now, Marco Island is also considering going back to monthly testing to get a better database, to make sure that at least Marco Island’s environment stays clean. Obviously, this needs to be a regional effect and other areas are only now considering these steps. In Marco Island though, planners are staying ahead of the game. Great consideration is going into using smart building techniques, which even includes thoughtful landscaping. Local landscapers work with their clients to make sure that any runoff doesn’t discharge directly into canals. The City of Marco Island also requires site-plan reviews even for things like walkways and patios. While at first, this might seem aggravating, it’s an effort to make sure that the amount of permeable areas can handle on-site stormwater. Plus, it helps ensure that we have a proper ratio of hardscape surfaces.
All of these efforts are setting Marco Island ahead of other Florida municipalities and helping to maintain our pristine ecosystem.
