The first LEED-certified green home on Marco Island is currently under construction by Kevin Williams Construction.
Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design, or LEED, is a symbol of excellence in “green” building that’s recognized worldwide. LEED certification aims to bring about electricity cost savings, lower carbon emissions, and healthier environments within homes, the workplace, institutions of education, places of worship, and other public facilities. LEED homes use less water and energy, enabling monthly savings on utilities. These homes tend to maintain their value over time. A LEED-certified home undergoes on-site inspections, documentation review, and performance testing to ensure the health and safety of occupants.
A point system across nine measurements for building excellence, from integrative process to indoor environmental quality, determines LEED certification.
The residence under construction, dubbed Sea Glass Marco, will be a single-story, open concept home with three bedrooms and three-and-a-half baths. Beneath a nearly 1,000 square foot covered lanai, the home will include a full outdoor kitchen with a gas grill—perfect for hosting parties with friends, or for a simple evening under the stars. Sea Glass Marco will have a spacious master suite with a large master bath and over-sized master closet. A private study will make for a great home office, spare bedroom, or a place to get lost in a good book. The cook of the family will revel in the chef’s-style kitchen that’s complete with a large working island, counter top-height bar, and state-of-the-art Sub-Zero and Wolf appliances.
While the average U.S. household spends a little over $2,000 on energy bills each year, LEED-certified homes use between 30 to 60 percent less energy, which can result in thousands of dollars in savings over a seven to eight year period.
Sea Glass is part of a rapidly growing market. A 2015 economic impact study released by the U.S. Green Building Council found that the residential green construction market is expected to increase from $55 million in 2015, to $100.4 million in 2018.
